Overwhelmed by the Christmas chaos? No time to slow things down? We feel you and we’d like to help.
It’s the ‘most wonderful time of the year’, they say. So how come half way into December it feels like we are running a marathon where Christmas is the finish line? We are busy trying to work off all the things we want to get done within the time vacuum between the old year and the new year. And while we are rushing from one Christmas party to the next we probably forget to appreciate the privilege of being able to break the circle any given day. It’s never too late to make a difference, so why not start this Christmas? Before you freak out about adding a new year’s resolution to your to-do-list, we thought we’d do the work for you.
These 5 conscious steps help you on your journey of a more mindful lifestyle. Start incorporating them in your life now and add points to your karma.
1. Analyse your life
To get you started, be aware that everything we do has an impact on our environment and adds up to the world we live in. The food we eat, the clothes we buy, the way we travel, everything. Take a moment to write down your lifestyle habits and try to imagine the consequences that come with them. Then check out Global Footprint Network’s footprint calculator to identify the actual numbers.
2. Go meat- and diary-free for a while
It’s a fact that the meat industry is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. According to an Oxford study carried it out this year, reducing your meat and dairy consumption is the single biggest way to minimize your ecological footprint. You don’t have to be radical, make small steps by gradually cutting down meat and dairy products. Not sure how to maintain a healthy diet? The Double pyramid created by the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition proposes a diet that is healthy for you and for the planet.
3. Shop vintage
Buying preloved fashion is a great solution for the conscious fashionista who wants to elaborate her style. Imagine the feeling of extending the life of a one-of-a-kind handbag that your grandma had – It’s up to you to safe the resources needed to create another bag. Grab a friend and team up to find the best vintage stores in your city. Some of our favourites are Beyond Retro in London, the Humana stores in Austria, or Vestiare Collective online.
4. Reduce your water consumption
Not everyone in this world has access to clean water. In case you didn’t know, there are ways to incorporate water saving techniques around your home, such as using rain barrels, washing clothes when you have a full load, and stopping unnecessary faucet use. Did you know that the simplest way to reduce your water and energy usage is using a shower timer.
5. Reduce your use of plastic
According to the UN almost all the plastic ever created still exists. Because we don’t want plastic to take over the world someday, make the switch to reusable items such as tote bags for shopping, metal straws for your favourite drinks or glass water bottles for everyday use.
Let’s be honest. Real change goes a long way but remember we are all in this together and it’s up to us to create the world we want to live in. Let’s make better life choices this Christmas!
