THE MOODBOARD
We recently launched our loden wool capsule collection - and we’re blown away by the amazing response. Thank you to each and every one of you supporting our venture into the colder seasons.
Some of you were very interested in loden as our preferred choice of material so we wanted to share more about its origins and why we love it as much as we love linen.
Linen and loden have more in common than you might think…
Both are traditional materials, developed long before synthetic textiles. Linen was sheets, aprons and workwear. Loden was the same thing higher up the mountain - what farmers, shepherds and hunters in the Alps wore because it could withstand the weather they worked in. Two sturdy cloths that people kept choosing for one reason: they lasted.
While linen is the perfect choice in the heat because it takes up moisture, dries quickly and helps move warmth away from the body, loden is excellent in the cold and wet. It’s made by washing, beating and agitating wool until the fibres lock together in a process called fulling. What comes out is dense enough to stop wind, slow to take on rain, warm without weight.
Both fabrics also get better with time: Good linen softens with washing and wear. Good loden develops its own surface and hand over the years while staying remarkably durable.
And both reward good making: With linen, flax quality, the yarn, weave and finishing change everything. With loden, it's the quality of the wool and the way its woven, fulled and finished.
And perhaps this is what we love most about bringing the two together.
Linen and loden are almost opposites, but they share the same philosophy. One helps you meet the heat; the other helps you meet the cold. One breathes with summer; the other shelters you through winter.
Together, they make sense as part of a wardrobe built around the seasons - natural materials chosen not because they are fashionable, but because they have been doing their job beautifully for generations.
Different climates. Different fibres. The same belief in making things that last.
